there with you
Saturday night
after a full day
spent
with football
and video games,
Vic & Bill’s,
Knoxville’s retreat
for the
terminally insane,
drag queens and
truckers, leather
and lace, and,
oh,
the day,
the day,
as beautiful as
a baby
sucking at its
mother’s breast,
and
now
we
make love,
a little rough
at first,
passion flowing
hard,
then
gentle and
soft,
and after,
as we lay
waiting for sleep
to overtake us,
we prayed
dewdropped
breaths of
thanks.

the groupie

i would give readings throughout Los Angeles
and there would be the poetry groupies.
they followed me, even though i told
them i had a woman. “but she’s in Phoenix,
she’ll never know,” they would say. one in
particular was a goddess, all red hair,
creamy skin, full breasts, rounded curves,
she followed me all over town. finally,
one night, she joined my group at the
Reno Room with Locklin, Zepeda and
some others. the drinks flowed,
she got hammered, me too, and we
went back to my place on Bellflower.
after a night of total delicious wanton
lust, splayed limbs, spent bodies, a
completely gorgeous night, we passed
out. the phone woke us early the next
morning. it was my woman in Phoenix.
after a brief hello, Marie asked, “do you
have a girl in bed with you?” holy shit!
how did she know?  i gulped and admitted
to it. “well, don’t catch anything.” that was
it!  that’s all! when the two later met at a
Long Beach coffeehouse, Marie looked
hard at her and asked “is this the one?”
i never saw my groupie again.
