There Was Talk Of Civil War In The Streets

there was talk of civil war
in the streets
as I read my poetry to the neighbors

I thought if there’s going to be a civil war
perhaps my reflective verse
wasn’t appropriate for life in these times
that I needed some poems about fires and looting
but everybody enjoyed it

you're really good, they said
with beers in their hands
and souls made of moonlight
and concrete

I guess it gave them respite
from their bayonet eyes
and violent guise

they said it touched them
somewhere inside
they didn’t know they had

I don’t want a civil war
I’m a pacifist
I like the green grass of summer
that makes you feel like
you can get out of
what terrorizes you

I like sitting on the steps
reading poetry to my neighbors
inciting the riot of meditation

The Unicorn on the Day After the Threesome

you
sat
alone
in
the
breakfast
nook

as
my
wife
served
grapefruit
with
sugar
on
top

while

put
out
spoons

and
you
became
invisible
