The Grind
 
There’s a reason
they call it
“The Grind”—
coffee beans turn
in a countertop vat
pavement crumbles
under the morning rush
and roadside flowers choke
 
our hands tighten
on the wheel
as we imagine
20-30 more years
of this...
and then?
 
hobble on bad knees
to the edge
of the Grand Canyon
stare at the river
far below
 
wonder what it’s like
down there
