Hotel

Artwork by Gene McCormick

I live in a hotel
for the disorderly
not allowed to push
the elevator buttons
all at once.

The windows
are decorated
with steel bars
and wire curtains.

I can fling myself
against the walls
and not hurt myself.

The only sense of order
is found rooted in the chaos;
someone’s sounding the sirens
to welcome the new arrivals.
